‘Hugging allowed from Monday’, but do I actually want one?
I never really considered how much physical contact actually mattered to me until I couldn’t get any for 2 months straight, nor had I considered what a source of anxiety it was to me until it was gone…..
Vaccine Passports - Do We Need Them?
The German word Fernweh is hard to translate. Fern means ‘far away’ and Weh is a sense of aching. The closest English word is wanderlust, the desire to wander, actually a word borrowed from German. However, it does not quite express that aching longing for travel that has overcome many of us since the start of the pandemic.
Vaccine Registration Open: What You Need to Know
Since being told “you must stay at home” in March 2020, the road back to normality has been a long one, full of small incremental steps. Some of these steps have seen the most onerous of the restrictions be lifted, but the most significant steps have been developments with the vaccines - trials showing safety and efficacy; the approval of them for use in the United Kingdom; and seeing our older relatives get theirs. Now, at long last, it is nearly the turn of the 18-29 year old category to get our jabs.

The seemingly ever-lasting pandemic has placed restrictions on both domestic and international travel over the last year, forcing us to minimise our movements. Modern Lives Part III:The Language of Nature & the Power of Quiet – a Private Space for Connection
As the paradigms of our new reality shift around us, the changes we’ve become used to seeing in our surroundings begin to reflect in the linguistic world around us. Jera Toporis explores the ways in which the Covid-19 pandemic has begun to influence the way we interact with language: through a triptych focusing on the language of our new reality; the development of language in isolation and the role of silence in shaping language. We end this triad with a reflection on “The Language of Nature & the Power of Quiet – a Private Space for Connection”.
Modern Lives Part II: Constructing Parallel Realities through Language in Isolation
The second piece in this triad is called ‘Constructing Parallel Realities through Language in Isolation’.
Fandemic: Following football during the pandemic.
After four years stuck down in the second-tier, Dundee United’s eventual escape from the Championship should have been a cause for celebration. Yet, supporters sadly weren’t there to watch the trophy held above the players heads, and nor could we be there to watch the Championship flag unfurled ahead of the opening day fixture against Tayside rivals St. Johnstone. Instead of a day of celebration at Tannadice, the opening day felt rather surreal.
Modern Lives Part 1: An Illusion of a New Reality Before the New Reality
As the paradigms of our new reality shift around us, the changes we’ve become used to seeing in our surroundings begin to reflect in the linguistic world around us. Jera Toporis explores the ways in which the Covid-19 pandemic has begun to influence the way we interact with language: through a triptych focusing on the language of our new reality; the development of language in isolation and the role of silence in shaping language. Starting this triad off is a piece entitled ‘An Illusion of a New Reality Before the New Reality’.
Our Defining Crisis: COVID-19 and The Youth
I haven’t laughed in 6 months. This is the realization I came to when I started working on this piece. Sure, I’ve chuckled and giggled, but I haven’t just laughed in that relaxed way that tells you everything is alright. And I am sure that I am not alone in this. COVID-19 has impacted all of us from all angles…
Coping With Anxiety—When Nothing is in Your Control
As a sufferer of a chronic anxiety disorder, I might seem like someone with the knowledge and experience to tell you how to cope with the anxiety. The problem is – I don’t know. I don’t know how to cope with anxiety, and actually, that statement in itself helps me cope.
