Best of Beer Bar

Beer. Bar. The combination of two beautiful words sure to catch any student's attention, Beer Bar is a beacon of hope on campus for the weary scholar in search of a cheap pint - or pitcher. A source of many memories (or lack of), Beer Bar definitely brings back old tales from times gone by. From the sticky floors, wasted money in the jukebox or drunkenly trying to use the Big Buck machine to slapping the roof, inventing pints of fun or the requisite gender neutral photoshoot, Beer Bar is quite simply an icon. Here at G-You, we were definitely happy to see Beer Bar reopen (and try out the new Route 56 pitcher), and wanted to look back on some of the GUU community’s favourite Beer Bar memories.

A source of many anecdotes…

“Straight to Beer Bar from the Stevie after winning our league last semester. I paid for our coach's entry to Hive and he repaid us kindly with a kitty for the team that soon became a designated Pint of Fun Fund. The jukebox was queued full of "We are the Champions" and "Simply the Best" as we spent the night in the alcove celebrating our last time together as a team and enjoying everything that the union had to offer us.” - Ewan Galbraith, Sports Editor

“The floor is always coated with beer and on Daft Friday I tripped and ended up doing a full slip 'n' slide across the room in my suit... Everyone started cheering, it was great” - Anon

“Dancing around to the Proclaimers and many renditions of Loch Lomond on Burns night” - Amy Briggs, PSM

“Standing in the line for cloakroom after Hive and falling on my ankle for no reason and refusing to stand up so I got carried home and couldn’t walk for three weeks” - Imogen James, Showcase Editor

“All the bell rings (bell ring = free drink for everyone) that happen on Super Sunday (day after GUSA ball)” - Amy Briggs, PSM

Particularly on Election Day...

“Going to Beer Bar after the SRC Election Results (having been there for a pint after campaigning closed), getting a pint of fun and strolling up to debates to watch the GUU count take place” - Duncan Henderson, That Guy from the SRC (also our Politics Editor)

“Day drinking on election day, grabbing food at Subway before going to my tutorial and spin class drunk - do not recommend” - Anon

And after exams...

“Drinking at 11am after my first Christmas exam” - Amy McIntyre

“The grand swilling of Matt Miller at the President’s Smoking last year, the evening after an exam and nearly choking on the smell of three month old keg of rotten pints (this isn’t a fave memory, its just traumatic)” - Anon

(Even in the new normal…)

"Beer Bar Trial Reopening! From starting at Old Schooly and Bank Street at 3pm to sadly discovering Barbeque Kings was shut at midnight, the reopening of Beer Bar was exactly as messy as you'd expect - even for the new normal. Plus being the first table back in (and Beth being the first person to spill a pint on the floor) definitely gives the team a special place in GUU infamy!" - Catherine Bouchard, Co-Editor In Chief

“The Beer Bar Reopening - getting there at 6pm and tasting that first pint of fun after five long months, and then having far too many and wondering how I got home!” - Duncan Henderson, Politics Editor

We love Beer Bar for its good tunes…

“Queueing Tom Jones’ “What’s New Pussycat” five too many times, as you do” - Patrick Aasen

“The classic standing on seats and banging on the ceiling to Come on Eileen - never gets old” - Anon

“Queuing songs on the Jukebox all night with my bffs! “ - Nina Munro, Social Media Coordinator

“Standing on the tables, singing my heart out” - Anon

Even if it is a struggle at times...

“Queuing every Thursday night with class music at the back and getting squashed by hundreds of tall people while looking for a graft - ahahhaha 5ft3 problems!!” - Nam Ranpuria, GUU President

“Standing on the table and still having to stretch to reach the ceiling because I'm just that small” - Courtney Hughes, Ex-QMU President (she doesn’t even go here)

But of course, no star is without its haters…

“Getting in to the lift and going to Billiards, the superior of the Union bars…” - Anon

“Walking through the exit door” - Anon

“When I finally manage to unstick my feet from the sticky floors to leave” - Anon

Love it or hate it, there’s no denying Beer Bar has made its mark on campus life, and holds a special place in our hearts!
