#GetItOffYourChest
If you haven’t heard of CoppaFeel! you’ll certainly know all about the Glasgow University team by the end of this year. Founded in 2009, CoppaFeel! is dedicated to raising awareness about breast cancer. Their main goal is to eradicate late and misdiagnosed breast cancer in young people through improving awareness. Most people in the 18-24 age bracket may believe that their chances of having breast cancer are slim but in actual fact it can hit at any age. In fact 1 in 8 women will be affected by breast cancer in their lifetime. CoppaFeel! founder, Kris, was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer at the age of 23 – that’s the age some of us will be when we graduate uni.
“There is no stage 5”
Unfortunately Kris’s battle with the disease is still an ongoing one. However, she was and still is determined to prevent other young people from facing the same struggles that she does. The reason why the term ‘young people’ is used is because it is not just women that are affected by breast cancer – 400 men are diagnosed with the disease every year in the UK. What started as one person’s mission has now turned into 64 ‘Uni Boob Teams’ promoting breast cancer awareness up and down the UK. The Glasgow Uni Boob Team is newly assembled but they are already at a running pace with their plans and events for this academic year. Like Kris and all the other teams their main objective is to get you guys to know the signs. Don’t be shy; it’s just you and your boobs.
Now this may be common sense but it is important to remember that if you notice any changes that are abnormal for you, you should be checked out as soon as possible by your GP. As any of the CoppaFeel! committee girls will tell you, never be afraid to #GetItOffYourChest and visit your GP – it’s what they are there for.
October is a big month for CoppaFeel!. Since it is breast cancer awareness month they of course have a jam-packed calendar. Keep an eye out for the girls around campus this month with their aptly named giant boobs Bobby and Bonny – you won’t be able to miss them. So far this month they have taken part in the Great Scottish run, in aid of CoppaFeel! of course, given awareness talks to a number of societies and hosted boob team bonding sessions for anyone wanting to be involved with this amazing cause. Don’t fear though, they still have a lot coming up for the remainder of October. On Saturday the 29th they take over Hive with glow paint and of course the ever important breast cancer knowledge. And finally, on the 31st they will be having a bake sale outside the Fraser Building on Library Hill – excellent pre or post library snack opportunity.
So please, keep an eye out for the girls this month and for the rest of the year. If you are interested in getting involved you can find out more info on their Facebook page just search CoppaFeel! Uni Boob Team Glasgow and you’ll find all you need to know.
And remember know your boobs, Coppafeel.
