Non-white Travel Influencers You Should Give a Follow

As a white person, I find it VITAL that I follow accounts that tell the story of people of other backgrounds, that show different worldviews to mine! I think this is a general necessity when travelling too. Here is a compilation of some non-white traveller influencers I’ve found interesting AND SUPER DUPER COOL. I think Instagram CAN be a healthy platform if we follow the right accounts!

Dr. Kiona, aka Kiki, is a digital educator born and raised in Hawaii currently living in Texas. She started out in 2016 with a mission to educate those around her through her world-wide travels. Featured on many media outlets – Huffington Post, Washington Post, Outside Magazine, Next Shark, among others – she also hosts a podcast called How Not To Travel, just one of many other things she participates in. She’s travelled lots in South America, North America, Africa, and Europe. Curious? Give her profile a visit!

Have you ever thought about dropping everything and hitting up an airport with a one-way ticket to see the world? Well Cameroonian-American, Lee Litumbe has done it. She gives an insightful experience of Africa through her photography and through her stories. You almost want to dive in an adventure with her tbh. And you can! She hosts all female creative retreats in Zanzibar where you can count on luxury, adventures, delicious food, and lots of culture.

@evierobbie // https://www.evitarobinson.com

Officially known as Evita Robinson, she is known for her TED Talk on ‘Reclaiming the Globe’ – a talk on what it means to be an American Black traveler. It all started out on a visit to Paris (very movie like I know). From then on she created NOMADNESS Travel Tribe in 2011, an online community consisting of first and foremost, travellers of colour. In 2018, Audacity Fest happened for the community that was created with NOMADNESS – a space where people of colour discuss their experiences of travelling. And she’s considered part of National Geographic’s 21 Most Visionary Women throughout Travel History (among much other recognition!!) for “breaking travel barriers”. She’s defiant of stereotypes and much more, have a look!

The first Black woman to have travelled to every country around the word is Ugandan-American, Detroit based, Jessica Nabongo. This woman is cool as heck! Starting out in the United States, where she was born, to first visiting Canada in 1991 and never stopping until she reached Seychelles in 2019. She is also quite known for her TEDTalk called ‘The World is Our Neighbor’, putting it out there that there is so much humanity in the world and all you have to do is be open to it.

@kalisamarieeats // http://kalisamarieeats.com

Right this one is for you foodies!! Jamaican chef, food science, culinary art and food media expert Kalisa Marie is here to give you a real treat of all the foods around the globe. Best part? She’s tried very many of them. Even better? She makes them too and can teach you how to! Her latest and first cookbook is all about her spin to Jamaican recipes - #YUM!! Give her a visit and discover her delicious world.

 These are really just SOME of the influencers I have found super duper interesting. But there are so many more you can follow, so continue your search if you’re so inclined! Here is another bunch that you should really look at:

@rahawahaile – Rahawa is Eritrean-American and first Black woman to complete the full Appalachian Trail hike.

@fromannettewithlove //https://linktr.ee/fatgirlstraveling- Mother of @fatgirlstravelling, traveler, writer and body-positive activist. (PERSONAL FAVE)

@sheisimanib – Imani Bashir is a Muslim Black traveler writer that shares her world view as an expat, the issues she faces not only in terms of her skin colour, as well her gender and religion. Interestingly enough she was living in Wuhan when COVID spread!

@kelleesetgo – Kellee Edwards is not only a travel writer, she is a pilot who travels to the most unvisited places on this Earth. She’s all about getting adventurous and exploring!!

And remember, black lives are meant to be celebrated EVERY SINGLE DAY, not only in October, not only when someone dies from police violence, not only when we share posts on Instagram - errydayyyy.
